From our brain to our joints, moving every day has the power to improve every part of our body. It does not have to be about high-impact, sweat-inducing exercise, either. It can be simple – whether we choose to implement small movements into our routine or try a new activity like cycling or yoga.
It is important to understand that it is all about movement, with very little needing to be involved and it should fit our fitness level. Whatever it may be, increasing our daily mobility can help upgrade our overall health.
Some benefits of everyday movement include:
– By moving, we strengthen our muscles, which improves stability, balance, and coordination
– Movement helps build more durable, denser bones. Bone-building activities like resistance training (weights), weight-bearing exercises (jogging, walking, hiking), and balance training (yoga) can support better bone density
– By being aware of how we move, we can increase coordination and balance, and be mindful of the positioning of our joints
– Walking 30-40 minutes a day three times per week can help ‘regrow’ the structures of the brain linked to cognitive decline in older adults
– By moving we improve our heart health
– Keeping our rate up improves our cardiorespiratory endurance. Circuit training or a group fitness class is a perfect solution, but again, we don’t have to perform a high-intensity movement.
Remember, that all your movement adds up! Small movements can have a significant impact on both our physical and mental health!
My advice is to find something or several activities you love to do and commit to it daily – whether it be full-body stretches, taking a walk or practicing yoga – set a reminder and make it happen! If you’re looking for some indoor movement that you can do from the comfort of your home without changing into gym clothes, then try a home workout. Just get your body moving every day!
